We provide homeland security solutions to law enforcement and Defence with focus on small unmanned aerial systems (SUAS), explosive ordinance disposal (EOD), tactical and forensics. We have developed our own software; a tactical ecosystem for the geospatial visualization of SUAS video including the generation of ortho-mosaics and 3D models. The software also provides tools for effective decision-making during mission planning.

Projects / tasks

The intern will be participating in the integration of a gimballed EO/IR camera system, video encoder and radio to a VTOL unmanned aerial vehicle. This will require electrical and mechanical design and implementation. Development and integration of payload control will then be incorporated into our software suite.

Technical skills

Desired skills Java 8+, video encoding/decoding, photogrammetry, network architecture, control loop programming, CAD design and 3D printing.

The intern will develop understanding and experience in mechanical design by working on R&D projects that will be focused around our current and projected Defence projects.

Projects / tasks:

Ballistic armour plate design, development, and testing; State of the art process technology system engineering, verification and validation; Composite space structure design and testing; CAE Analysis (Excel, MATLAB, FEA, CFD, etc) of high pressure hydroclave consolidation chamber.

Technical skills:

Later year student with hands-on approach to design and development. Honours or other specific project experience in systems engineering and requirement development, mechanical machinery design, composite materials, FEA, CFD and or ballistics.  Familiarity with the SolidWorks and MATLAB products would be beneficial.

Our staff maintain a roughly 60%-40% split of work time between project-related work and R&D. For project-related work we have several ongoing Defence projects delivering and sustaining multiple systems. An intern will have the opportunity to contribute to a full systems engineering life cycle in one or many of these projects including requirements definition, system design, implementation, deployment and test. For R&D, the intern will have the opportunity to work in R&D activities to develop next generation capabilities destined for use by the ADF.

Technical skills:

Our ideal intern will be studying a technology or electronics focused engineering discipline such as electrical, telecommunications, mechatronics or software engineering.  Systems engineers are also sought after.  Some ability to write code (C or Java);  Knowledge of IP Networking;  Knowledge of the principals of RF communications;  Signal Processing Engineering skills or awareness that we seek include: – Requirement Definition – Design – Verification and Validation – Engineering Management
