There are a wide range of machine learning tasks for space that interns can participate in. Prior interns worked on space weather analytics to fill gaps in critical data, orbital mechanics, the design of large 100+ constellations, and spacecraft design.

Technical skills

If the student can code we can teach them to do space: Orbital mechanics, spacecraft design, SATCOM, space physics. Students that can code and do space are high interest but preference is for C#/Unity coders. Interns wishing to go into the Machine Learning and Spacecraft Engineering streams should have a good knowledge of Python and/or C/C++.

  • Assist in design and modelling a broadband asymmetric bi-conical omnidirectional antenna with improved elevation coverage above the horizon.

Complex Test Equipment: On the job training with the large range of electrical test equipment used to provide In-Service Support to a wide range of Electronic Warfare (EW), radar, radio-communications and other electronic systems.

R & D Project Work:

  • Experimentation to assist with current R&D of a new Cost-Effective Radar Electronic Support (R-ES) system;
  • Participate in a new R&D Project that investigates Platform Features of Signals onboard Maritime Platforms;
  • Accompany personnel on off-site visits to a number of companies that support Australia’s Defence industry.

Development of a high fidelity vehicle driver training system including motion system, high precision vehicle handling and dynamics simulation, integrated vehicle sub-system modelling and interoperability with distributed training federations. This project will require software, electronics and mechatronics engineering, thus would be suitable for students from any of our three identified engineering disciplines.

Technical skills:

Should have an interest in simulation technology and military training. Must be willing to work in a small, cross functional team and able to conceptualize their work within a whole-of-project context. Knowledge specific to Virtual Reality and 3D rendering would be desirable from a software engineering candidate.

From an electronics / mechatronics candidate we would require knowledge in PCB design and designing electronics to drive electrical actuators.
