JORN Sounders and Transponders (S&T) project goal is to update ionospheric sounders and JORN transponders across Australia. As part of the production of the updated hardware, a rigorous testing will be conducted, including sophisticated RF measurements. The student will take a central role in identifying, developing and implementing the automated testing procedures. The work will include both object-oriented software development for instrument control and signal processing, and hands on experience with electrical and RF measurements.

Our company has developed a number of products in the fields of Electronic Warfare and Passive Radar. At the core of these products is a highly sensitive multi-channel coherent receiver. A key part of this topology is a switched filter bank, which will cover the full HF, VHF and UHF spectrum. We are the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of an innovative range of high speed equipment pods suitable for carriage on military fast jets and helicopters. Variants include electronics pods, supersonic camera pods and cargo pods.

We also provide engineering and manufacturing services for filament wound carbon fibre rocket motor casings to support the space industry’s growing need for solid rocket boosters.

Conceptual design of a physical display stand for rocket motor casings. Skills in Computer Aided Design software will be exercised (and developed) in this task as well as the ability to apply practical knowledge and design considerations for fabrication methods.

In support of our future high speed pod variants, the creation of a simulated tactical display showing the effects of an airborne jamming pod will have on fighter jets and surveillance aircraft flying in an operational area will be a task our Intern will focus highly on.

Assisting the production team to produce composite parts and assist with the ongoing maintenance of our company flight test aircraft.

Our company designs, develops, maintains and evolves a variety of Electronic Warfare and Sonar products for use by the Australian Defence Force across maritime, air and land platforms.

These integrated system solutions are designed and developed in Adelaide, Australia and are comprised of a combination of analog and RF electronics, high technology circuit cards (high speed analog to digital conversion, CPU, GPU and FPGA based processing), and custom FPGA firmware, embedded and application software.

Our project teams comprise a mix of software, firmware (FPGA), electronic, systems and specialist engineers.

Projects / tasks:

The successful intern(s) will be given exposure to a range of projects and tasks covering design, development, integration, and testing that will be selected based on their education and interest areas.

Tasks will be aligned with a formal Defence program and will contribute to a current or future capability. As part of their task the Intern will be embedded within project teams and exposed to the workings of the larger program to help with understanding the assigned task, the application of their craft in industry, the formal Defence engineering process, and the operation of the Defence industry in general.

The following tasks are being proposed for intern involvement:

  • RFSoC RF Stimulator: development of a radar environment generator using RF System On Chip (RFSoC) and FPGA technology. Suit electronic engineer with interest in RF, DSP and FPGA development (VHDL).
  • RF Prototyping: prototyping and evaluation of RF processing cards using rapid prototyping modules. Suit electronic engineer with an interest in analog and RF electronics.
  • Automated SW Testing: development of automated SW testing of a military system using Robot Framework. Suit computer science or software engineer with an interest in formal testing of military systems.
  • Support Tool Set Improvements: expansion of toolchain automation to support SW development from build through to system deployment; and enhancement of team collaboration and automation using chatbots. Suit computer science or software engineer with an interest in DevOps and collaborative/team development of software in a Defence environment.

Technical skills:

Computer Science/Software Engineering candidates will have a knowledge of object oriented programming principles and the software development lifecycle. Familiarity with languages such as C, C++, Java and Python; Linux and Windows operating systems; SW build tools and version control, and Agile development techniques is an advantage.

Electronic Engineering candidates will have an interest in in one or more of the following areas: Radio Frequency (RF) and analog systems, Digital Signal Processing (DSP), Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA)/Programmable Logic. Knowledge of the Systems Engineering Lifecycle is an advantage.
